Farm girl Elizabeth Isle’s childhood is fairly idyllic, set in the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire, England, but before long the Second World War breaks out. Now she must become accustomed to the terror of hiding under the stairs when a bomb siren goes off, the hardship of food rationing, and soldiers trying to steal the family car or falling asleep at the wheel, smashing the farm trailer to smithereens in the process. When war is over a relieved Elizabeth goes to boarding school and thereafter settles into a mundane career. Little does she know that once the war ends, her spirit for adventure will bring about a very different sort of excitement.

A Yorkshire Lass: The Early Years is a prequel to Kookaburras, Cuppas & Kangaroos.

Lucky Jack (1894 – 2000): Memoirs of a World War 1 POW

Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal – Best Biography 2023

“One of the perils of being a sniper during the First World War was the likelihood of a grenade going off right next to you and burying you alive”.

Meet Jack Rogers. Born in 1894, he once locked eyes with Queen Victoria and was one of the first travellers on London’s ‘Tube’. An early car owner, he had many escapades on his days out to Brighton, including a time when his brakes failed and he had to drive through central London without them!

His skills as an entertainer earned him popularity throughout his life, and kept him out of the deadly mines while a prisoner during the First World War. At the tender age of 103 Jack earned the title of ‘The World’s Oldest Columnist’ as he began dictating his life’s exploits to a reporter from the local newspaper.

“It’s extraordinary, and memoirs like Lucky Jack are almost like time capsules that share the individual experiences that we may know about collectively but cannot connect to personally.“ – Readers’ Favorite Review Best Biography Gold Medal Award
